Frank deMatteis
Originals

A native of Ontario, Canada, Frank has been painting since 1970, his first showing involving 35 pieces was a sellout. Patrons and connoisseurs alike appreciate Frank's scientific accuracy, elemental to creating the movement and lush environment of his subjects. Watercolor is the medium of his choice being "the most honest medium. It is very unforgiving, leaving little room for error."

Frank has had a lifelong fascination for nature especially birds and their ability to fly. He is a keen supporter of The Trumpeter Swan Reintroduction Program in Canada.

His works are included in many collection around the world including Japan, Italy and England. The prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wausaw, WI., selected his work for the annual "Birds in Art" show in 1984, 1985, and 1992. His 1985 entry, "The Mocking Bird" is among the museum's permanent collection.

"The correct name for the common loon is, the great northern diver. This name is most descriptive. Loons are most apt and efficient underwater. Away for gaping eyes, these birds carry on their private endeavor of survival, sometimes diving depths up to 200 ft. I wanted to show the loon in its most efficient realm, an element from which it has evolved so perfectly. To do this I found myself snorkeling in the clear waters of Killarney, off the northern shore of Georgian Bay"

"The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), in Toronto Ontario, Canada, had a wonderful diorama that depicted a scene of passenger pigeons. It evoked many responses. Unfortunately the diorama was dismantled. I felt that there was a need to preserve the theme the diorama depicted and it was requested of me to do so. The image in this painting was inspired by a woodlot, Albion Hills, just north of Toronto. I imagined how it must have been when the passenger pigeons would darken the sky with their en masse migrations."
