Joyce Meck
Originals

A transplanted eastern "mainlander," Joyce and her husband lived in Maui, Hawaii from January of 1998, through January of 2007. A new adventure unfolds as they currently live in Albuquerque, NM. She has an associate degree in commercial art, advertising and marketing, graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and for much of her life, she has been designing logos, print media and signage. She is currently a board member of the Lahaina Art Society on Maui, an active member of the Corrales Society of Artists in New Mexico and the Watercolor Society of New Mexico.
"While I feel that good design is imperative in painting, . . . I don't make all the decisions up front, which means that in the end, each painting is sort of a surprise. I like to try and get a little abstract in the background sometimes, and try techniques like "pouring." I love brilliant colors, and try to make them work for each painting. Generally, I use a limited pallet of only 6 or seven special colors, and mix everything I need from those few. I often use many glazing layers to achieve a color or effect, maintaining the transparent look of watercolor. Occasionally, I also use acrylics, casein, and dry pigments."
"I am often influenced by Oriental things, but nature is my biggest inspiration. The mountains can appear different every day, depending on the weather, and the sea never rests. The endangered, rare and extinct birds of Hawaii hold a special interest to me, and I have a goal to eventually paint them all. I don't necessarily paint what I think will sell, instead I get an idea and wonder if I can carry it off. I paint what inspires me in nature, with all it's splendor, detail and mood, not to duplicate, but to appreciate."

'Cockeyes' was done not only with watercolor, but also with dry pigments. The teal color in the eyes as well as the small circular feathers near the body was done with the mineral known as malachite. Come to think of it, there is a lot of dry pigment in the other image (Midas Touch) too - primarily in the background.

Dry pigment, often used by Biblical Iconists, can be mixed with turpentine for an oil based paint, or with water and gum arabic for a water based paint. The advantage of using dry pigments is that the old theory of longevity of oil vs watercolor now goes out the window. Dry pigments, mixed either way will last literally for centuries, just like oils.... I wanted to try dry pigments when I watched a demonstration by David Lee, well known Chinese artist from Hawaii, and we talked quite a bit about it. David often paints on gold leaf with dry pigments, or on silk with dry pigments. In all cases, he does not mix his pigments with turps, but with water!
